Go 2 Dental School

Earlier today a friend and I were reflecting on our days in dental school. We were trading "war stories" about how hard dental school at the University of Tennessee had been when we attended a few years ago. It seemed each of us tried to outdo the other with a hardship story worse than the one that had just been told.

This always seems to happen. Get two dentists in the same room and inevitably the story will turn to their respective time in dental school. The yarns are woven with bits of humor, anger and always with exaggeration. At the end of the day both parties will agree it was all worth it but they would never do it again!

I could not help but think of this while sitting in my recliner, jack russell at my side, working on my latest project. Over the past several months my new creation http://www.go2dentalschool.com/ has come to life. From an outsourced website design up to the current content placement it has been a tough but rewarding process.

My goal was to create a website for the individual interested in applying to dental school. When I was going through the application process over 18 years ago the internet did not exist. I had to rely on a pre-dental advisor for information. This is pretty scary now that I think about it. I pretty much handed my hope for a future in dentistry over to a person I hardly knew.

Looking back there is some recollection of taking the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) and filling out a couple of applications but it is fuzzy at best. In the past everything was done on paper and by "snail mail" so you would think that information about this process would be readily available and organized. Not so! Information on applying to dental school is scattered, unorganized and, at times, out of date.

http://www.go2dentalschool.com/ has set out to change this!

http://www.go2dentalschool.com/ is an exclusive membership site created for the pre-dental student. It offers information regarding pre-dental requirements, the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) and the application process to dental school in one organized, easy to use location.

So if you or someone you know is exploring the idea of going to dental school have them check us out at http://www.go2dentalschool.com/.

Marietta and the Marines

I am sitting in my hotel room in Georgia as I write this post. My day was spent in a planning conference for an exercise being put together by the Marines. I am acting as a representative for the dental component of the exercise and will be serving as the dental officer in charge (OIC) for the evolution.

One thing I have learned in the planning process. Planning is imperative to any worthy activity!

For instance, these guys (Marines) think of everything. The thought and manhours that go into planning an exercise is amazing. The mission is the focal point but everything that goes into supporting the mission cannot be overlooked. You may have heard the phrase "bullets, beans and bandages..." This is a phrase that refers to all of the things that support a successful mission.

Oral surgery is no different; its just on a much smaller scale. Take for instance the implant case that I performed yesterday. I placed two implants for a patient that will replace two of her front teeth that have been missing for months. The surgery went very well and I think it can be attributed to good planning.

To begin with, on every implant case x-rays are made to ensure there is enough bone to support an implant. Stone models are also made. These models are used to fabricate a surgical guide. This guide is used to place the implants in the exact location based on precise measurements taken from the models.

With all of this information the implant case is planned. The case is performed on the models (in my dental lab) before I ever touch the patient. This process allows me to evaluate what to expect when the actual surgery takes place and adjust the procedure as needed.

I will post this patient's xray as soon as it is available so you can see the results.

Well, time to hit the rack...more planning with the Marines early tomorrow.

Dr. K

Animated Implant Video

Check out the link to an animated video on dental implants. Find it in the right hand column just below the news updates.

I hope to have a couple more video links in a couple of days.

Here is an x-ray image of an implant I placed about an hour ago. The patient elected to have the implant placed with local anesthesia only. The tooth being replaced has been missing for a couple of years. It was lost due to dental decay. The procedure took about 30 minutes and he did very well.

I will have this patient back in one week to remove his stitches (2). I will also evaluate the surgical area to ensure it is healing well. In about three months we will restore the implant by placing a custom post on the implant followed by a permanent crown (commonly known as a cap).

It is a great way to replace a missing tooth and most adults are candidates for implants.

First Delivery

Well, I just sent out the first delivery of my new e-book. It has been a tremendous learning experience to get to this point but it has been worth it. I am excited about the prospect of growing my readership over the coming weeks.

Oh yeah, I just got an email from http://www.ezinearticles.com/ today. They have approved my first article and have placed me in the expert author category. I plan on trying to put a few more thoughts together for a second article before calling it a night.

Local Radio Show...

Tuesday morning, Feburary 19th, I have been invited to speak at a local radio station (WANT 98.9 FM) in Lebanon, Tennessee. I routinely advertise on this station and have a "live" spot each Monday as a sponsor for the talk show "Coleman & Company."

"Coleman & Company" is a program that highlights local businesses, community service projects, local politicians and special events. I have been associated as an advertising sponsor for this program for over a year and it has a great format. Although I am very familiar with Coleman's program, tomorrow will be a bit different for me.

To begin with, I have been invited to speak as an oral surgeon representing University Medical Center in lieu of being a paid advertiser. The University Medical Center is a community hospital located in Lebanon, Tennessee. On regular occasions the hospital invites members of the active staff to speak on a topic in their specialty. This speaking invitation is provided in the hospital's alloted timeslot. It is a much listened to segment of this morning show.

Additionally, I will have 20-25 minutes to talk with Coleman vice the 4-5 minutes that I usually spend on Mondays. It is pretty easy to fill a 5 minute segment but the expanded time is somewhat more difficult. Not to worry. This opportunity could not have come at a better time. I plan on using tomorrow's air time to discuss dental implants and promote my new website http://www.infoaboutimplants.com/ to boot.

During my regular segment this morning, I informed Coleman that I had something special in store for our discussion on Tuesday. He briefly asked what it was but I told him we would go into detail tomorrow. He laughed and said he would wait.

My plan is to announce the new website and promote my FREE e-book to the listeners. I also plan on giving a print copy to Coleman for a reference to our discussion. Hopefully we can also distribute a few copies via the website to folks within the listening area.

Check back in a few days and I will let you know how it goes.

Regards,
Dr. K
